5 Amazing True Crime Podcasts for September

‘It’s no secret that I’m a true crime junkie.  I spend two hours a day driving to and from work, so I make the most of this time by listening to true crime podcasts…’

These are my top picks to fill your ears with death and destruction this month.  These are 5 amazing true crime podcasts to tune into as autumn takes hold….
.

In The Dark

Now in its 2nd season, this American podcast concentrates on a single story, which is told in weekly instalments.  Season 1 is one of my favourite podcasts ever, so I was keen for the second season to be released.
.
Season 2 tells the story of Curtis Flowers from Winona, Mississippi.  Curtis has the strange honour of having been tried for the murders of 4 people from a local furniture store a grand total of 6 times.  Yes, that’s 6 TIMES.
.
Flowers has won numerous appeals, but each time, the prosecutors simply try him again.  He has been on Death Row for more than 20 years and continues to maintain his innocence.  The authorities believe in his guilt, but not everyone is so sure…
.

True Crime All The Time

This is one of my favourite ‘casts.  I regularly tune in to listen to Fergie and Gibby relaying some of the most bizarre cases in the history of true crime.  The ‘cast generally tells a different story each week, with the exception of a few multiple episodes covering some of the more infamous serial killers.
.
TCATT only covers cases with a resolution, where someone has been charged with the crimes committed.  I tend to favour these as I like knowing that justice has been done and there’s not a murderer on the loose…
.
There’s a touch of light humour to the scripts, but the research is fantastic and I’ve yet to find a case I didn’t enjoy.
.

Fatal Voyage

This podcasts recounts the story of the untimely death of Hollywood star, Natalie Wood.  I read a book about the case a few years ago, and was instantly hooked by the potential involvement and subsequent lack of cooperation by the two men who were present with Wood on the night she died.

These people were Robert Wagner, who was Wood’s husband, and Christopher Walker, who was a recent co-star of the actress.  I guess, like everyone else, I’m intrigued by the apparent drowning of a woman who refused to get in to water because she was terrified of it.

There are so many aspects of this case that just don’t add up and, interestingly, although Wood’s death was recorded as accidental at the time, it was recently reclassified as undetermined. Make of that what you will.

Dr Death

This is a brand new release (end of August) and, so far, only three episodes are available.  however, those episodes are so shocking, that the podcast merits inclusion on the list.
.
Dr Christopher Duntsch is a qualified M.D and PhD, from Montana.  He’s intelligent, attractive, and was billed as one of the best and brightest surgeons during his residency in Tennessee.
.
Fast forward a few years and Dr Duntsch and his ego have taken off into the stratosphere, and his oath to do no harm becomes a distant memory…
.
The first episode takes you back to the beginning of the investigation that uncovered the horrors this man committed on patients who trusted him with their lives.  The rest of the series details just how easy it was for him to have privileges withdrawn from one hospital and simply move across town…  In total, he murdered or botched surgery on more than 33 people before he was stopped.  That’s 33 that authorities are aware of.  There’s no telling how many more are out there.
.
Dr Death is brought to you by the same company (Wondery) who left me aghast with the story of Dirty John earlier in 2018.
.

Serial

It’s FINALLY back!  Like so many other people, Serial was the first true crime podcast I ever listened to and it made a huge impression on me.  I didn’t know anything about the story from Season 1, but was instantly hooked by the complexities of the Adnan Syed murder case.
.
Admittedly, I didn’t actually listen to Season 2, but mainly because I wasn’t interested in the case.  I need murder, people!  Army desertion does nothing for me.
.
For September 2018, Sarah Koenig and the team are back; this time from Ohio.  In a major switch up for the podcast, Season 3 will not just focus on one case, but many.
..
The full season is based around the justice system in Cleveland. This time round, the girls have enlisted the help of home-grown investigative reporter, Emmanuel Dzotsi.
.
Trailers have already been released and the first episode drops on Thursday 20th.  I’m no maths genius, but I do believe that’s less than two weeks away.
/
I’ve rarely wished away 11 days of my life more.

What’s on your true crime podcast list for September?
